What is auto glass?

Answer:
Auto glass, or automotive glass, is glass
that is specially made for use in automobiles.  This glass can be found on car and truck windshields and windows, and is impact and shatter resistant.  Although auto glass can still break, it is not as breakable as ordinary glass, and breaks in a different pattern, to minimize injuries.

When auto glass is broken, which requires more force than other types of glass, it does not shatter, but breaks in a web-like pattern. Windshields or windows in a car or truck can be broken in a variety of situations.  Car accidents are a common reason for the breaking of auto glass, as are automotive break-ins.  Often, a thief will shatter one or more windows in order to get at something in the car, as this may be the easiest way to enter the car.

In addition, auto glass can be damaged by rocks or debris hitting it, resulting in chips or cracks.  This happens most commonly with windshields, when a rock or other small object hits the front of the car, chipping or cracking the windshield.  It is a good idea to get this repaired immediately, as the crack can spread over time, especially with large fluctuations in temperature.  In many jurisdictions, a driver can receive a ticket for driving with a cracked or damaged windshield.
