This can protect you from purchasing a vehicle that is a known lemon. To get a Vehicle History Report, you need to know the vehicle’s VIN number. The VIN number is located on the left-hand side of the vehicle in the dashboard. Once you have the VIN number, you can go to one of the many websites that offer these reports and give them the number. CARFAX.com is an example of a site you can use to get a vehicle history report. You will then be provided with the report, which will show you whether or not the information that you are being told about the vehicle is accurate.

Carfax and I'm assuming other vehicle history report companies get their information from auto insurance companies.  When a claim is submitted to an insurance company carfax knows about it.  If a vehicle has been wrecked and a claim submitted then it will show up in the report.  A vehicle history report also shows the origin and title owners of the vehicle.  You can see where the vehicle was sold and when it was sold.
