What is a Stock Car?

Answer:
Although the term stock car is usually
used in a way that is interchangeable with race car, that is not how the term began.  Originally, a stock car was any car that had not been modified or changed from its original configuration at the factory.  In contrast, a race car is a car that has been specially built for racing.

Most stock cars appear to be built just like automobiles – usually sedans – that are available for purchase by the general public.  However, they are now built in order to race, to a special set of specifications mandated by NASCAR or another stock car governing body.
