What is drifting?

Answer:
Considered a motor sport of its own since the early
1970s, drifting began as a driving technique during racing.  Drifting involves steering a car so that the slip angle in the rear of the car is greater than the slip angle in the front.  The auto must be steered so that the front wheels and direction turn are opposite each other.  For example, the car may be turning right while its front wheels are pointed left.  The driver must have control of these factors or the move is not considered to be drifting, but rather fishtailing.  Drivers in auto races may use drifting as a technique to block other cars or gain a lead during turns.

Drifting competitions are held around the world, with the professionals competing in strictly controlled conditions.  The technique becomes extremely dangerous when amateur drivers try to replicate the moves, often on city streets.    There are several different ways to drift, including braking and clutching, and drifting is much more effective in rear-wheel drive automobiles.
