Formula racing is a type of auto racing that uses single seat open-wheeled automobiles. 
Formula racing comes from Grand Prix motor racing, the earliest form of automobile racing.

Although Formula One is the most well-known, formula racing has other divisions as well, including Formula Two and Formula Three.  Formula one is seen as the pinnacle of formula racing, with many drivers working their way up to become Formula One racers.

Formula One is based in Europe, but other countries have their own versions of formula racing.  For example, Japan has Formula Nippon, while the United States used to have Formula Atlantic, now called the Atlantic Championship.
