What is the Octane Rating of Gasoline?

Answer:
An octane rating is a number that indicates
the ability of a particular formulation of gasoline to resist knocking when used in an internal combustion engine. Knocking occurs when gas spontaneously ignites because of the compression process instead of being ignited by the spark delivered through the spark plug.

When this occurs it can cause damage to the engine. The octane rating tells how much compression the fuel can handle before it will spontaneously ignite. The higher the octane rating, the less knocking the engine will experience. Vehicles that have engines with a high compression ratio must use fuels with a high octane rating. “Regular” gasoline is typically an 87-octane fuel. This is considered a low octane rating. The better the fuel, the higher the octane rating will be, and the higher the cost will be in most gas stations.
