New Jersey has a seatbelt law that requires all front-seat passengers and drivers to wear a seatbelt. Anyone with a Graduate Driver License must require all passengers, even those in the rear, to wear seatbelts. Anyone under the age of eight or who weighs less than 80 pounds must be in a child safety seat. Children between the ages of 8 and 18 must be buckled into a seatbelt at all times, even if they are in the rear. The fine for failing to follow this law is $20. Also, New Jersey requires all people on a motorcycle to wear a helmet. When driving in New Jersey, you must always follow the posted speed limit. Failure to do so will result in a fine and points added to your record. Business districts, residential districts, and school zones have a speed limit of 25 mph, although in suburban areas the limit is sometimes raised to 35 mph for business and residential roads. State highways have a 55 mph speed limit, and some highways and most interstates have a 65 mph speed limit. All other roads have a limit of 50 mph. No one driving in New Jersey can use a cell phone that is not equipped with a hands free device. Also, those with a learner’s permit or an intermediate license must not use a cell phone, even with a hands free device.
