What are the Utah State Driving Laws?

Answer:
Utah uses a point system to track dangerous
drivers. Traffic and moving violations carry a point value that is added to the convicted driver’s record. Here are some common violations and the points they carry:

·                    Reckless driving – 80 points
·                    Tailgating – 60 points
·                    Running red light or stop sign – 50 points
·                    Passing violation – 50 points
·                    Right of way violation – 60 points
·                    Speeding – 35 – 75 (depending on speed)

Drivers who are over 21 will have to appear for a suspension hearing after accumulating 200 points in three years. Drivers under the age of 21 will have to appear for the hearing if they earn 70 points within three years. At the hearing, your license could be suspended for several months.

You must always follow the posted speed limit when driving in Utah. On the interstate, the speed limit will be either 65 mph or 75 mph, depending on where the road is located. Business or residential areas have a 25 mph speed limit. Major highways, unless otherwise posted, have a 55 mph speed limit. Violating the speed limit will result in a fine and points added to your record. Utah does not have a cell phone law.

The law in Utah requires that all passengers wear a seatbelt if the car has one. Also, children under the age of five must be in a car seat. The driver is responsible for passengers that are under the age of 17. Violating the adult seatbelt law results in a $45 fine. Anyone under the age of 18 who is on a motorcycle must wear a helmet.

If you come upon an emergency vehicle with its lights on that is parked on the side of the road, give that vehicle has much room as possible. If you can, change lanes so that you are not in the lane adjacent to the shoulder. If the vehicle is moving, go to the right hand side of the road and stop. Remember, emergency vehicles that are signaling an emergency always have the right of way.
