Your first New York driver’s license will
be good for four of five years, depending on your age, and will expire on your birthday. You can renew any time in the year before your driver’s license expires.

The license can be renewed for four, eight, or ten years. You can renew in person, through the mail, or online.

However, you must pass a vision test, so if you do not renew in person you will need to visit an eye doctor.

In order to renew online, you will need to do the following:

· Have an eye doctor complete the Eye Test Report (http://www.nysdmv.com/forms/mv619.pdf )

· Visit http://www.nysdmv.com/licrenew/default.html and follow renewal instructions

· Pay renewal fee via credit card.


The renewal fee is $50 for a Class D license and $58 for a Class M license for eight years.

When you renew online, your new license will come in the mail after at least four weeks.

To renew by mail, you will also have to provide the Eye Test Report (http://www.nysdmv.com/forms/mv619.pdf ) completed by an eye care professional. If you are qualified to renew through the mail, the renewal notice will come with the renewal application.

You will receive your new license after at least four weeks. If you wish to have a new photo taken, have moved, or do not meet the requirements to renew online or through the mail, you can visit your local DMV office to renew. You will need to bring the form that the DMV mailed to you.
