How do I get a Commercial Driver’s License?

Answer:
A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required to drive any truck
with a gross vehicle weight (truck plus load) over 26,000 pounds. In most states, you must be 18 years of age to drive a commercial truck within your state and 21 for interstate driving.

Your first step to getting a CDL is to enroll in a state-approved commercial driving course and apply for a learner’s permit. You must pass knowledge and vision tests to receive your permit. Once you have completed the course, you may apply for your license. You must pass a series of knowledge and maneuverability tests to demonstrate that you can safely drive a commercial truck and comply with all rule and regulations. The DMV will then issue your license.
