How do I transfer a car title in-state and out-of-state in Alaska?

Answer:
Newcomers to Alaska are required to register
their vehicles within 10 days of establishing residency or beginning a job. Alaska residents must register a new or used vehicle within 30 days of its purchase.

In each case, in addition to the completed application, proof of ownership, e.g., title release from the previous owner or a manufacturer’s certificate of origin from the dealer, must be provided. Current odometer information must be included on the application and on the proof of ownership.

Proof of liability insurance to specified limits is required. Some vehicles are subject to emissions testing, proof of which must be presented at time of registration.

New residents must present their out-of-state registration and title, including the odometer reading. If there is a lien holder in another state, applicants will receive a vehicle registration only and the lien holder will be sent the title, unless applicants have obtained a lien release.
