How do I transfer a car title in-state and out-of-state in Alabama? |
|
Answer:
All 1975 and newer cars must be titled in Alabama. If the vehicle is financed, detailed loan information must be provided. Form MVT 5-7 must be signed and notarized. New titles require a physical vehicle inspection. A marriage license or divorce decree may be required in some cases. Proof of liability insurance is not required; however, confirmation, by signature, that the owner carries liability insurance is required. In-state purchasers of new or used cars must apply for title transfer within 20 days of purchase; they need to provide a bill of sale and the title assigned to them on the reverse of the original Alabama title obtained from the seller. New Alabama residents have 30 days to apply for title. Their out-of-state title and registration must be surrendered when they apply.
