How do I transfer a car title in-state and out-of-state in Georgia?

Answer:
If you have lived in Georgia for 30 days, you
are considered a resident, and within 30 days after establishing residency, you must register and title your 1986 or later-model vehicles.

First-time applicants must show a valid Georgia driver’s license or state-issued ID card and provide a completed MV-1 Tag and Title Application (downloadable from the web site), their out-of-state registration and title, and any lien holder information on form T-17 (the lien holder will receive your new Georgia title).

Liability insurance is mandated; some counties require emissions testing; and in some cases vehicle inspections are required.

To transfer Georgia title to a new owner, the seller must complete the “first assignment of title” on the reverse of the title and, if an odometer reading is required, both the seller and buyer must sign it. The buyer, then, must apply for title and tags within 30 days of the purchase or transfer date.
