To title a new car, the owner must supply a Title Application; a certificate of origin; a conforming odometer statement; proof of sales tax payment; and a vehicle identification number inspection if purchased from an out-of-state dealer.

To title a used car, the owner must provide a properly assigned certificate of title; a conforming odometer statement; and a vehicle identification number inspection if purchased from an out-of-state dealer.

Vehicles registered in Lake and Porter counties, and newer vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,000 or fewer pounds (the GVWR is usually noted on the driver’s side door jamb), must undergo emissions testing and tampering inspections every two years.
