How do I transfer a car title in-state and out-of-state in Kansas?

Answer:
New Kansas residents have 90 days to
obtain a state title and registration. A motor vehicle inspection is required for out-of-state and out-of-county vehicles.

After the inspection, an MVE-1 receipt will be issued. The pink copy of the MVE-1 should be surrendered at the time of application for title and registration.

If the title is held by a lien holder, both sides of the title must be faxed to the county treasurer’s office or the vehicle inspection station. Proof of insurance and a valid out-of-state registration are required.

To transfer ownership, the vehicle’s seller must complete the required information on the assignment of title. If the purchase price is not recorded on the title, a bill of sale must be provided to the buyer.

The seller should remove the vehicle’s license plates upon delivery to the buyer. Within 30 days of purchase, the buyer must present the assigned title and the bill of sale in order to obtain a new title and license plates.
