How do I transfer a car title in-state and out-of-state in Michigan?

Answer:
Michigan requests that new residents apply for

their Michigan registration and title immediately after establishing residence.

The relatively simple process requires them to provide their out-of-state registration, title (or proof of title if held by a lien holder), and proof of Michigan no-fault insurance at any Secretary of State branch office.

To transfer title for a privately purchased vehicle, obtain the title from the seller, with the seller’s portion and the odometer disclosure completed and signed, and take it, along with identification and proof of Michigan no-fault insurance, to any Secretary of State branch office within 15 days of purchase.
