How do I transfer a car title in-state and out-of-state in Montana?

Answer:
Newcomers to Big Sky country must register and title
their out-of-state vehicles within 60 days of establishing residency. They should visit their county treasurer’s office and submit their out-of-state title and driver's license and an Application for Certificate of Title for a Motor Vehicle.

Although new residents need not present proof of insurance, Montana requires that proof of insurance be in the vehicle at all times.

Title transfers for private vehicle purchases are handled through the county treasurer’s office within 20 days of purchase; they require a signed and notarized title; an odometer disclosure; a bill of sale; and an Application for Certificate of Title for a Motor Vehicle.
