How do I transfer a car title in-state and out-of-state in South Dakota?

Answer:
New South Dakota residents must register and
title their out-of-state vehicles within 90 days of establishing residency. The process is easy: Complete the Application for Motor Vehicle Title and Registration and attach your out-of-state title to the application, then visit the local county treasurer’s office.

To transfer title of a privately purchased vehicle, complete the Application for Motor Vehicle Title and Registration within 30 days of purchase; obtain a lien release if there is a lien on the seller’s vehicle; attach the properly assigned title from the seller (with accurate odometer reading) and a Bill of Sale to the application; and go to the local county treasurer’s office to complete the transaction.
