To register a vehicle that has been either recently
purchased in Hawaii or brought to Hawaii from the continent, you will need to following documents:

· Registration application

· Current registration if out of state

· Motor Vehicle Use Tax Certification

· Vehicle title if not in lien

· Document proving vehicle’s weight

· Bill of laden for out of state vehicles

· Hawaii Inspection Certificate which includes proof of insurance



The fee for registering a vehicle in Hawaii is based on the weight of the vehicle. Additionally, if you need to transfer your title, you will pay between $5 and $10.

Because Hawaii is a state made up of islands, there are some unique registration requirements. If you are transferring the vehicle from one island in Hawaii to another, you will also have to transfer the vehicle’s registration. This requires you to prove your new residence on the new island.

You will also have to pay a 4% excise or imports tax on any vehicle you bring to Hawaii from the mainland if the vehicle you are bringing to the mainland is two years old or newer.
