What are the New Jersey Vehicle Registration and Title Requirements?

If you purchase a new vehicle in New Jersey,

whether it is new or used, you will need to title and register it within 10 business days of purchase. You will need to bring the following documents to your local MVC Agency to complete the process:

· Application for Certificate of Ownership

· Signed title (for used car)

· Sales tax form

· Proof of insurance

· Social Security card or equivalent

· Odometer reading

· Application for registration

· Driver’s license number

You will need to pay $20 for the title. If you have any liens on the title, the fee increases to $40.

The fee to register the vehicle is between $84 and $35.50, depending on the weight and age of your vehicle. The older the vehicle, the less it costs to register. You will also have to pay a 7% sales tax at the time of registration and titling.
