If you have recently purchased a used car in Texas, be for an unpleasant surprise. Every few years, I do buy an older car which often requires small repairs. My latest requisition was 15 years old Toyota with salvage-rebuild title. Car has a few problems like broken lights, problems with Instrument Panel, radio, messed up hood and bumpers, etc. around 160K miles. I paid for the car “as is” $700. The friendly folks at Dallas County told me your car is in “our” book listed over $5,300. Those sob must be using a book from 1999 or older. I have been present with an option: take your car the car to a Toyota dealer or to an independent state approved agent which can revise the value of the car. The car value appraisal is not free, and should run over $300. In the end I ended paying over $420 in fees and taxes for a car which cost me $700. Three years ago for a very similar car I had paid for similar service $43 that is 1000% increases in fees. Looks like big boys at state of Texas has declared a war on “little guys”. Write comment
