What is a CDL?

Answer:
A CDL is a commercial driver’s license.
A CDL is required to drive vehicles with a gross weight (vehicle plus load) of more than 26,000 pounds—such as tractor-trailers, busses, dump trucks, and auto transporters. You must be 18 years of age to obtain a CDL for driving in your state and 21 to drive across state lines.

Commercial drivers must receive special training in maneuvering and regulations.  The license exam consists of multiple maneuverability and knowledge tests. Certain medical conditions, such as high pressure or diabetes, may disqualify some applicants. In most states, you must undergo a full medical evaluation in addition to vision and hearing tests as part of the application process.
