What is a Certificate of Title?

The certificate of title on a vehicle

is an official document that shows who owns a particular vehicle. In the eyes of the law, if a car is not titled in your name, you do not own it.

While each state has a slightly different title, the title generally has the name and address of the current owner, information about the vehicle itself, and the date that the car was first sold. When you choose to sell your car, you will sign over the title to the new owner. If you have a loan on your car, the lien holder will hold your title until you have paid what you owe.
