What is a Class E Driver’s License?

Answer:
A Class E driver’s license is commonly called a chauffeur or taxi license.
It authorizes the holder to operate a vehicle with passengers for a fee. The vehicle itself must be classified as noncommercial, even though the driver is engaged in a business.

Vehicles operated by Class E drivers include taxicabs, limousines, shuttle vans, and livery sedans. Taxi drivers must obtain a separate permit from local authorities in addition to the state license. Drivers must be at least 18 years of age (21 in some states), hold a regular driver’s license for a minimum period of time, and pass a criminal background check. Note that some states do not require or issue Class E licenses.
