What is an Emissions Inspection?

Answer:
An emissions inspection is a test to determine
how much pollution your car is producing.
Many states and cities require emissions inspections when cars are registered. These tests are done by certified inspectors and take around 30 minutes to complete, provided there is no wait time before starting the test.

If a vehicle does not pass the emissions inspection, it will need to be repaired to reduce the amount of emissions produced before you will be able to drive it. Some states allow you to have a repair waiver if the repairs do not fix the emissions problem. This is generally after you have spent a certain amount on repairs. For instance, in the state of Maryland, you can have an emissions waiver if you have spent $450 or more on emissions related repairs and the car still fails the emissions inspection.
